AYLWARD DEMANDS ANSWERS ON TOURISM PEI FINANCIAL OVERSIGHTS

Opposition Tourism Critic James Aylward demanded that Tourism Minister Robert Henderson either take responsibility or hold someone accountable for the mismanagement of $8.4 million of Island tax dollars within Tourism PEI.

Aylward highlighted that this is a huge oversight of Islanders tax dollars and someone has to be held to account. He has serious issues with the fact that Tourism PEI has handed out contracts that were untendered, that invoices were issued without the work being done and money was handed out without approval.

  • GOVERNMENT CREDIT CARD EXCESS SPENDING QUESTIONED

    The Opposition Caucus raised issue with Government excess in credit card spending during question period today.

    Critic for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development Colin LaVie questioned Minister Ron MacKinley for charges laid on his Government credit card for the past year, in particular on meals.

    "If this Government is going to ask Islanders to cut back, they must be prepared to do the same," said LaVie. "Minister McKinley spent $4200 in one year on meals alone. That is almost two months of salaries for the average Islander."

  • OPPOSITION CAUCUS QUESTIONS LOFTY PRICE TAG ON 2014 CELEBRATIONS

    The Opposition Caucus raised issue with the Ghiz Government's proposed $75 million plan for the 2014 Celebrations in today's sitting of the Legislature.

    While the Opposition feels it is important to celebrate our Canadian and Island heritage, they feel it is most important to do so in a cost efficient manner. They believe $75 million for a party is far too much to pay given the current economic times.

  • Ghiz hires Friends while firing more Islanders

    The Opposition Caucus was critical of Premier Ghiz's practices of giving $60,000 to TIPIA to hire the defeated MLA, Cynthia (Dunsford) King, while people working in Island Liquor stores are being told today that they are fired.

    Opposition House Leader, Steven Myers pointed to the double standard that the Ghiz Government likes to practice. He questioned how the Premier can justify hiring Ms. King during to current economic times.

  • Government's Hidden Agenda for Education Questioned

    The Opposition caucus questioned the Government's true motives regarding school infrastructure projects in PEI.

    MLA for Souris - Elmira, Colin LaVie raised issue with the fact that the Government led Souris students and parents to believe for three years that they would have a new K-12 school, only to back them into the corner of accepting renovations instead.

    He questioned how Government decided that $20 million was the proper amount to build the school to begin with. "Either this Government knew all along that they couldn't afford the $20 million renovations or they don't understand how much a dollar is worth."

  • Ghiz's Education Record under Fire

    The Opposition Caucus was critical of the Ghiz government's record on education. They pointed out that while Ghiz claims that education is a priority for his government, his failing record speaks for itself. To highlight this fact, Opposition Leader and Education Critic Olive Crane, pointed to the firing of teachers; the move to one undemocratic school board; and the reneged promises for the Montague Intermediate Expansion and the new Souris K-12.

    MLA for Georgetown - St. Peter's, Steven Myers, raised issue with the hypocrisy of Ghiz's decision to ignore the opinions of parents, students and teachers of Montague Intermediate, pointing to the statement from the Premier as Opposition Leader in 2006.

  • Crane congratulates PEI Cattlemen's Association and Fresh Media on PEI Burger Love Launch

    Opposition Leader, Olive Crane extended congratulations to the PEI Cattlemen's Association and Fresh Media on the launch of the second annual PEI Burger Love Campaign. Crane, who attended the official launch, applauded the work of the two groups on their innovative techniques used to engage the public and Island business community to support local producers.

    "PEI Burger Love is a great initiative which raises much needed awareness about the importance of buying local and gives the Island business community a great opportunity to support local producers."

    Crane encouraged Islanders to support the campaign which runs until the end of April and reinforced the importance of buying locally throughout the entire year.

  • Opposition Caucus sports pink shirts in support of Anti-bullying

    The Opposition Caucus is joining the fight against bullying by participating in "Pink Shirt Day" today. The caucus is proud to wear pink shirts in of support this important day of awareness as every seven seconds a child is bullied in Canada.

    Opposition Leader, Olive Crane encouraged all Islanders to partake in the day by wearing their favorite shade of pink.

    "The more people who raise awareness about this important issue, the more likely the provincial government is to take action against bullying in our schools and communities."

    Crane added that while most common in youth and children, bullying can occur at any age.

  • PC Party of PEI announces AGM details

    The Progressive Conservative Party of PEI Annual General meeting is set to be held Saturday, March 3rd at the Loyalist Lakeview Resort in Summerside.

    Party President, Sylvia Poirier, expects it to be a very productive day, with discussion primarily focusing on the proposed new PC Constitution.

    "The completely revised constitution proposes a new mission, vision and values for the PC Party and should make for interesting discussion by the members," said Poirier.

    Gerard McCardle, Chair of the AGM says the full day event will begin with a question and answer period between the PC Caucus and party membership, giving members the opportunity to discuss important issues affecting Islanders with their elected representatives.
