  • Issuing Statement on Lack of Rheumatologist in PEI
    2011-08-10
Olive Crane issued a release today disagreeing with reports in the media that the Department of Health stated that there is a rheumatologist practicing in Charlottetown. According to the Medical Society of Prince Edward Island, Dr. Kenneth McCarthy practices internal medicine, not rheumatology.

Olive appreciates the hard work of Dr. McCarthy in treating arthritis patients and filling a gap in our Island medical system created by not having a rheumatologist. She commends Dr. McCarthy for the care he has provided Island patients and the interest and extra training he has obtained in this area. Yet the fact remains, PEI has no rheumatologist.

Olive is very concerned for the 21,000 Islanders with arthritis who deserve to receive treatment at home, with proper support of their community and government. It is for this reason that her PC Government is fully committed to recruiting a rheumatologist to practice in PEI within the first year of their mandate.
